We have already had another 23rd great edition of a unique event on a European scale – the Great Dragon Parade in Krakow. Year by year it gains more and more fans, becoming one of the most recognizable events on the map of Krakow. This weekend, love for Krakow is equal to love for the Wawel Dragon Festival.
The Great Dragon Show
Finally, the most famous Polish dragon – the Wawel Dragon has finally got his own large family! On the evening of June 8, he introduced his brothers and sisters to his many friends from Krakow during the Great Dragon Show on the Vistula. What’s more, he organized such a show that there would be something to remember for the whole next year. Fortunately for the people of Krakow, but unfortunately for the Wawel Dragon, he is forced to organize a party every year. Why? Because a long time ago, a certain Wincenty Kadłubek ruined his image in his gossip chronicle. Now the Dragon has to constantly remind everyone that he is actually very nice and friendly. But in fact, the Wawel Dragon once admitted at a press conference that he did not come up with the idea, but the director of the Groteska Theater. The Dragon owes his popularity to his closest friend, Adolf Welczek. Thanks to this friendship, an event unique in Europe was born, during which the dragon family first takes part in an evening show on the Vistula River, and then marches through the streets of the Old Town of Krakow.
– Mom, look! How huge he is! – shouted one boy from the crowd of several hundred thousand people that had gathered on the bank of the Vistula. Some, really devoted fans came to take a seat with the best view as early as 3 hours before the start. The famous Krakow ship restaurants were also fully booked.
Great Dragon Parade
This year, the annual Great Dragon Parade took place in the heart of Krakow. During this year’s edition, 21 dragons passed from Planty through Grodzka Street to the city hall! Sewn, glued, made of books, newspapers, CDs, shiny, jumping, breathing candy, on bicycles or carried by their guardians and creators. And all this, to later win the title of the best dragon of the 23rd edition of the Great Dragon Parade on stage. The audience’s biggest favorites (measuring the applause) were probably Toothless from the cartoon “How to Train Your Dragon” and the Dragoness from “Shrek.”
See you next year for another great edition of the Great Dragon Parade!
