Aicon 2024 -“Let’s party until dawn!” Everything associated with Asian culture can be found at this convention.
Although humans are not, as a rule, a completely rational being, they value comfort and convenience. If you have ever participated in a costplay, you know what I mean. Even if the costume itself is not too heavy and bulky, elements such as imitations of swords, firearms, hems, tiaras, magic staffs, etc. are either heavy or fragile. This doesn’t pose any problem when you commute by car, but most often you travel by public transport, where these key costume elements are always out of luck. Fortunately, the Aicon organizers had this in mind when looking for the perfect venue for the event. The Technical School Complex in Rybnik is located a ten-minute walk from the railway station, which only brings a big smile to your face.
Once we have enjoyed this nice walk (but of course you can also take a bus almost to the door) and the security will thoroughly examine the contents of each of our bags (safety first), we enter the world of imagination. The abundance of Asian culture amazes us at every turn. The entire building looks like one big maze, with a striking amount of entertainment at every turn. “It’s only 1 p.m. and I can’t feel my legs anymore!” – comes a voice from the crowd. No wonder, because each floor of the technical school offered attractions worth seeing. There wasn’t a second, except during lunch time, when any corner of the building was empty. The number and variety of things to buy from the exhibitors only tempted me to leave all my wealth here. And here are some books, here are stamps and stickers, here are T-shirts, here are mascots… and so on ad infinitum! It was hard not to be tempted by a gift from Aicon.
“Do you wanna eat ramen?” – NOOOO!
Perhaps the biggest advantage of Aicon is the extensive panel of lectures and workshops. You could learn basic words in Japanese and Korean and get to know the culture, mentality and traditions of these countries. During the workshops, try your hand at drawing manga characters, writing calligraphy or dancing. Do you dream of or are you already going to some Asian country? In that case, it was really worth listening to experts at least for a moment during their dozen or so lectures on this topic. Only on Aicon could you find out why you should be careful with the innocent question: “Do you wanna eat ramen?”. How about competitions and dance competitions, board games and… the cult game Osu! Or maybe you would like to have karaoke or commemorate these wonderful convent experiences by getting married?
Another burden at this type of event is looking for accommodation. As it turns out, the organizers had also anticipated this, because all you needed to do was take a sleeping bag and good company. Of course, for the most persistent ones, who had been impatiently waiting all year for the next edition of Aicon, the convention attractions were available without interruption until Sunday noon.
