LUCIBELA Wieczór Kabowerdyjski na Siesta Festival
This will be her return to the stage of the Gdańsk Philharmonic. To say that she is perhaps the closest to the legendary Cesaria is to do a bit of injustice to this young artist. Her voice, with a rare nobility, wide range and depth of expression, is perfectly her own. On the other hand, there is a lot of truth in this comparison. Lucibela, born in the infamous Tarrafal, where the Salazar regime imprisoned oppositionists, raised on the Islands, sings traditional music. While Sara Tavares, Mayra Andrade and Dino di Santiago flirt with club rhythms – Lucibela, like Wynton Marsalis in jazz, ensures the survival of the sources.

She started in the hotel bars of the islands of Sal and Boa Vista, singing songs by Cesaria, Titina, Bana. Inevitably, like all Kaboverdian artists, she wanted to prove herself in Lisbon. For several years she sang there with the band Nos Raiz (our roots) under the open sky, on the old marina at the central square of the city. Whenever her voice was heard there, the crowd thickened and did not disperse until the last song. She recorded several songs with the band for the album Conquistador in 2017. However, it was obvious that a talent of this caliber needed global exposure. Lucibela was heard by the infallible Jose da Silva, discoverer of Cesaria and owner of the Lusafrica record company. He invited her to the studio in Paris and found the most outstanding musicians for her first album.
There is no doubt that we have one of the greatest talents of the decade in front of us. The first album – Laco Umbilical heralded years of revelations and emotions, and that’s when we invited Lucibela to Poland for the first time. 2022 brought another phenomenal album and world tour: Amdjer. We are happy and proud to once again present the voice that delighted the whole world.
